Utah KSL.TV Vapor Systems Installed in 32 Homes Near Air Base Feb. 11, 2004 FARMINGTON, Utah (AP) -- Vapor-removal systems are being installed in 32 homes affected by contamination from Hill Air Force Base. Steve Hicken, restoration programs manager at the base, said the $1,500 vapor-removal systems have been or soon will be installed in homes in Roy, Layton, Riverdale, South Weber and Clearfield. The vapors from contaminated groundwater have risen up through the basements into the homes. While chemical levels are not immediately dangerous, long-term exposure could be hazardous, Hicken said. Affected residents will receive $500 per month to offset the inconvenience and the utility cost of running the system, which takes air from the basement and blows it out of the home. "Part of that is for the nuisance factor of us coming in and checking from time to time," he said. Hicken told the Davis County Board of Health that of all the residents in areas affected by plumes of contaminants from the 1940s through the 1960s, 522 have agreed to have their homes tested.
