Hawai'i HAWAII TRIBUNE-HERALD Searching for bombs By Dave Smith/ Tribune-Herald Friday, February 06, 2004 A Tennessee company contracted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has begun combing parts of South Kohala for unexploded World War II - era ordnance. The effort is part of a five - year, $50 million program to find and remove ordnance from parts of the 123,000 acres formerly known at the Waikoloa Maneuver Area. So far only $10 million for the first year has been funded by Congress. Initial efforts will focus on 680 acres in three locations, Waikoloa Village and the Ouli and Lalamilo sections of Waimea. Chuck Streck, manager of the project, said those areas were picked because that is where many new homes are being constructed. Included are undeveloped areas inside Waikoloa Village, some of which are planned for parks or playfields. Streck said members of the community specifically asked for help in those areas. "We all agreed to make them the highest priority," he said.
