California KRON 4 Local Casino Site Has Hazardous Waste? Posted: March 9, 2004 at 9:49 p.m. SANTA ROSA (BCN) -- A Rohnert Park coalition opposed to a proposed Indian casino is claiming that land on or near the casino site west of Rohnert Park may be contaminated with lead and unexploded ordnance from a nearby World War II U.S. Navy airfield. The Stop the Casino 101 Coalition made its claims before the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors this afternoon and will present them to the Rohnert Park City Council Tuesday evening. Board Chairman Mike Reilly said the board regards the 320-acre site as inappropriate for the hotel and casino and he asked the county administrator's office to confer with county public health officials to determine if a public notification is necessary. The coalition claims a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers report states the site has been identified by the Department of Defense as being contaminated with waste that includes at least one 1,000-gallon underground gas or oil storage tank, unexploded ordnance, and lead from a firing range. The coalition also claims Environmental Geology Services, a consulting firm in Santa Rosa, indicates the site poses a threat to human health and the environment and that the contaminants from the former naval air station most likely spread to the nearby proposed casino site. Leading casino opponent Chip Worthington said he wants the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria to prove there is no toxic waste on the site.
