UPCO Ignored Residents in Path of Contaminant Mary Jo Pitzl The Arizona Republic April 1, 2004 NORTH PHOENIX - Dolores Hesselbrock lives southwest of the UPCO plant, the very direction that the company suspects is the path of contaminated groundwater. Yet company officials didn't contact her or her neighbors when they rushed to test local drinking-water wells for contamination last week. Instead, they looked to the neighborhood to the north. Goodrich Corp., parent company of the aircraft ejection-seat manufacturer, announced last week that tests showed high levels of perchlorate in the groundwater beneath the plant. Perchlorate inhibits the thyroid and is cropping up in water supplies near explosives manufacturers.
