Zoning Concerns to Be Addressed Monday

Residents of eastern Craven County will get the chance to voice their
opinions about proposed zoning at a public hearing Monday night.

The zoning outside Havelock along N.C. 101 comes as a result of the 2002
Air Installation Compatibility Use Zone study that outlines ways of
protecting encroachment on Cherry Point. Encroachment that limits a
military base's ability to train its soldiers is considered to be a key
factor when 2005 Base Realignment and Closure commission decides which
bases to close.

The idea behind the zoning is to limit or even eliminate development in
high noise or accident potential zones from military planes and
helicopters that use Cherry Point.
Some property owners in the proposed zoned areas say the changes could
effectively make their property worthless or severely reduce its value.
If the zoning is approved, they would like to see some compensation for
what they say would be financial losses.
