"It's real good fishing," the 62-year-old retiree said. "But don't tell anybody, or they'll all come here." They just might, if environmental preservationists and economic development leaders have anything to say about it. A long lineup of regional, state and federal officials vowed during a dedication ceremony Tuesday to preserve and promote the uniqueness of the new Lost Mound Unit of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge at the old military depot. They said the refuge will bring environmental and economic benefits to northwest Illinois, which has suffered the blows of many industry closings and job losses, including the phasing out of the old Army depot five years ago. "This is just the beginning," said U.S. Rep. Don Manzullo, R-Ill., who is credited for setting up a team of military, environmental and other government officials to get the Army property turned over as a wildlife refuge. "The next step is marketing this to the rest of the country, to let them know how rare of a place we have here," Manzullo said. "It's part of returning the Savanna Army Depot and the beauty back to the people." The new refuge covers 9,404 acres of natural habitat for rare wildlife and plant species, including about 4,000 acres of uplands and about 5,500 acres of bottomland at the river. ... for the entire story, see http://www.qctimes.com/internal.php?story_id=1026894&t=Gateway&c=30,1026894 -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 <lsiegel@cpeo.org> http://www.cpeo.org =========================================================== Sign up to get FREE information from leading colleges!
