Arsenal clean-up succeeds

It's good to see big environmental problems get solved. In this case,
it's the Rocky Mountain Arsenal north of Denver.

Twenty year ago, the arsenal was called the most polluted ground in
North America. The former U.S. government chemical weapons plant and
pesticide factory harbored a witch's brew of toxins, some of which oozed
into nearby drinking water wells. But cleanup at the 17,000-acre arsenal
has been exemplary.

Last week marked an important milestone, when Interior Secretary Gale
Norton (a Colorado native) announced formal transfer of 5,000 acres to
the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Eventually, the agency will manage
15,000 acres for native animals and birds and some human recreation.

Several difficult projects had be finished for the cleanup to get this
far. Unexploded chemical weapons were removed and rendered harmless.
Contaminated buildings were demolished. Pools of liquid toxins were
mopped up and their contents placed in safe storage facilities.
