Calderon?s request to put Vieques and Culebra on the National Priority (Superfund) List the Vieques community is gearing up for a long struggle to ensure the Navy cleans up its former lands as completely as possible. Gov. Calderon used her one-time authority to request the inclusion of Vieques and Culebra on the Superfund List, which gives the EPA broad authority to compel cleanup of lands, without going through the cumbersome process of ranking the sites. Last week, community and labor groups set up a three-day camp at the Navy?s former live-bombing range on the eastern tip of the island, the scene of a year-long occupation following the April 19, 1999 death of security guard David Sanes during a bombing practice accident.
