By Chris Keller Sauk Prairie Eagle (WI) April 21, 2004 Tests of drinking-water wells serving dozens of homes south of Badger Army Ammunition Plant showed low levels of dinitrotoluene, a chemical considered a possible human carcinogen by the Environmental Protection Agency. The U.S. Army announced the results last week to residents of about 40 homes who live near the intersections of County Highway Z and State Highway 78, Dam Road and in The Windings subdivision. While test results show DNT, a chemical used in the production of explosives, gun powder and rocket fuel, does not exceed state Department of Natural Resources drinking water standards - which is 50 parts-per-trillion - the army voluntarily provided bottled water to those who live where the chemical has been found. Steve Ales, a hydrogeologist with the DNR remediation and redevelopment program, said the results are from about 40 of the 80 or 90 wells that were tested.
