Hazardous substances at condo site: 50 units planned
DEP tells owners to do more testing

SCITUATE - The 50-acre site of a 250-unit condominium complex in
Scituate has high levels of lead, oil and other hazardous compounds,
state environmental investigators have found.

The amount of the substances found on the former military testing and
manufacturing site is not considered serious enough to pose an immediate
health risk ??but it does need further investigation,'' Department of
Environmental Protection spokeswoman Theresa Barao said.

The DEP has given property owners Arnold and Benjamin Goulston a year to
conduct the additional tests and either clean up the site or form a
satisfactory response plan.

The state's findings apparently are not enough to deter plans to build
what would be the town's largest housing complex on what is known
locally as the Proving Grounds.
