The Army stopped training at the 3,840-acre base north of Camas in 1995, but its plans to turn over the land to Clark County for a regional park have stalled because unexploded munitions and other pollution riddle the property. Tests have found that explosive compounds, including cancer-causing ammonium perchlorate and RDX, have leached from ammunition into groundwater at a spot the Army refers to as Landfill 4/Detonation Area 1. In that spot near the camp's northern boundary, soldiers destroyed munitions by detonating them and then buried the remains. The contamination has spread about 300 feet but remains inside the camp's boundary, said Eric Waehling, the base environmental coordinator. ... for the entire story, see http://www.columbian.com/04252004/clark_co/138400.html -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 <lsiegel@cpeo.org> http://www.cpeo.org =========================================================== $6.95 .com Domain Name Sale!
