Burr, a Winston-Salem Republican congressman, is the state's only lawmaker on the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Last week two Energy and Commerce subcommittees heard testimony about the environmental exemptions, part of President Bush's proposed defense authorization bill. During the hearing, many Democrats appeared hostile to the exemptions, while many Republicans said they were inclined to give Pentagon officials the benefit of the doubt. In his comments, Burr stuck to the middle, saying he was concerned about exemptions after hearing the story of Jerry Ensminger, a retired Marine whose daughter was conceived at Camp Lejeune when the drinking wells were contaminated. She later died from leukemia. Ensminger, of Richlands, testified before two Energy and Commerce subcommittees on Wednesday. "Trust is absolutely essential when considering the exemptions requested by the Department of Defense," Burr said. Burr asked whether anyone from the Marine Corps was in the audience to hear Ensminger's testimony. No one raised their hands. "I am disgusted," Burr said, that headquarters Marine Corps hadn't sent someone to listen to Ensminger. ... for the entire story, see http://www.jdnews.com/SiteProcessor.cfm?Template=/GlobalTemplates/Details.cfm&StoryID=22082&Section=News -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 <lsiegel@cpeo.org> http://www.cpeo.org =========================================================== Graduate in less than 13 months with AIU?s Online virtual campus.
