LITTLE FALLS -- In a land of postage-stamp lake lots, Camp Ripley is a
rare natural behemoth -- 53,000 acres of rolling hills, forests and
winding rivers.

The camp seven miles north of Little Falls also is the primary field training
site for the Minnesota National Guard. It plays host to troops from around the
world. Window-rattling artillery fire and rumbling aircraft sometimes disturb
the peaceful northwoods quiet.

Military officials are joining with environmental groups to preserve a
three-mile protective zone around the camp to make sure development
doesn't threaten the camp's operations.

As more Minnesotans are called up to serve overseas, Camp Ripley's
importance as a training facility is growing. Military officials hope to
avoid the experience of bases in other states that have had to limit or
reduce training operations because of complaints from nearby residents.
