Hundreds gather to learn about Camp Ripley?s buffer zone

Several hundred people gathered at Camp Ripley?s Recreation Center to
garner information on Camp?s proposed buffer zone.

The proposed three mileArmy Compatible Use Buffer (ACUB) has been
proposed so as to create and enhance a natural buffer around Camp Ripley
by taking advantage of available opportunities to prevent encroachment
and enhance conservation and land management.

Camp Commander Rich Weaver explained, that by securing a buffer, Camp
Ripley can continue to offer and provide critically important, high
quality military training and operations to ensure combat readiness, as
well as mitigate community development encroachment around the training
site. 

Under the ACUB project the DNR will act as the lead purchasing and
easement negotiation agency.

The June 2 meeting was moderated by Loren Boyum. The format included the
brief explanation from the camp commander and an explanation of what
role the DNR would play by Commissioner Gene Merriam. Those attending
had the opportunity to visit various tables to ask questions.
Representatives from the National Guard, county, DNR and other partners
in the program were on hand to answer questions and explain their role
in the project.
