PETERS June 10, 2004 After 50 years in the hands of the federal government, the last 200 acres of Water Island that the U.S. Interior Department controls could be handed over to the territory as early as next month. But as the federal government completes the final stages of the transfer, the local government has left many of its obligations in the deal unfulfilled. Water Island residents, concerned that the land will pass to the local government with so much work to be done, are calling on federal government to hold local officials to their end of the bargain. Today, officials from the Army Corps of Engineers will present their final report on the level of contamination from the chemical weapons testing the U.S. Defense Department conducted on the island after World War II.
