A day of joy for families

It had been a long, hard year for Brenda Norman, Regino Hernaiz and for
thousands of other parents with sons or daughters serving in Iraq.

They'd gotten to know more than they ever wanted to about places like
Karbala, Najaf and Babylon, and they'd struggled through so many
sleepless nights.

But the anxious wait for some ended happily yesterday afternoon, when
three buses from Fort Dix, N.J., pulled into theparking lot of Dominican
College in Orangeburg, Rockland County.

The 442nd has gotten more than its share of attention the past few
weeks, ever since the Daily News reported that four soldiers from the
company tested positive for depleted uranium contamination most likely
caused by radioactive dust released from exploded U.S. shells.

These four - as well as several other members of the unit - had been
sent home months ago for treatment of various ailments. They all say
they became sick with unexplained illnesses while their unit was
stationed in the Iraqi town of Samawah last summer.

They say Army doctors repeatedly refused their requests to be tested for
depleted uranium.
