Military dealt a setback in environmental ruling by a House committee

Military exemptions to environmental laws were dealt a potential setback
this week, when the House Energy and Commerce Committee reserved its
right to object to them in the future.

The move preserves the committee's jurisdiction over the parts of the
defense authorization bill that would exempt military ranges from two
hazardous waste laws and allow a three-year delay for the military to
show compliance with the Clean Air Act.

If the bill moves to the House floor with the exemptions, Energy and
Commerce Committee members can bring exemptions back for the panel's consideration.

Committee spokeswoman Lisa Miller confirmed that Chairman Joe Barton,
R-Texas, had decided to preserve his committee's authority to block the
exemptions.
