Activists challenge claim that Alameda Point is safe
Federal government says area is OK

ALAMEDA -- Local environmentalists are disputing the federal
government's claims that Alameda Point is safe for redevelopment.

The federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry reported in
February that the former Naval Air Station is safe from contaminants
posing a public health risk.

Contamination of groundwater, soil, indoor air and fish exists at
Alameda Point, but not at a level high enough to be a public health
hazard, registry spokesman Scott Mall said at the time the report was published.

Environmentalists, though, said Wednesday the registry report is
inadequate and gives a misleading impression of the hazards at Alameda Point.
