As the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria undergo a federal environmental review of their casino site, opponents are pressing to expand the inquiry to include potential contamination from an adjacent former U.S. Navy airfield. Before the casino was ever proposed, the World War-II era Navy facility was on a long list of former defense sites slated for further investigation by federal officials. Casino opponents claim that leaking underground gasoline storage tanks and cleaning solvents used by the Navy may have contaminated ground water in the area. A study they commissioned also suggests there could be problems from large amounts of lead left over from an old machine gun target practice range within a few hundred feet of the casino site. Officials express skepticism the old airfield caused such widespread pollution problems. But the issue has drawn attention from Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D-Petaluma, and renewed an investigation by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which is responsible for overseeing almost 10,000 former military facilities across the country. ... for the entire story, see http://www.pressdemocrat.com/local/news/05airfield_b1_5.html -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 <lsiegel@cpeo.org> http://www.cpeo.org =========================================================== Empower your Team with Remote Access.
