Five acres of a 71-acre parcel at Letterkenny Army Depot is to be excavated this year and about 25,000 tons of soil hauled away, according to a plan by Weston Solutions Inc., West Chester. The Weston project can be reviewed at the Coyle Free Library, 102 N. Main St. People have until May 18 to comment on the proposal. The plan also will be discussed Wednesday at the regular meeting of the Restoration Advisory Board. The board, which reviews cleanups at Letterkenny, will meet at 7 p.m. in Building 14 on Michigan Avenue at the Army depot north of Chambersburg. The Army chose a $2 million alternative that calls for chemically fixing the lead in the soil before hauling the soil away to a recycling plant in Maryland. The technology is reliable, readily available and easily implemented, according to the analysis. Without chemical fixation, the cost of carting off and disposing of the lead-tainted soil would more than double. About one-fourth of the soil would have to be treated as a hazardous material. The Army decided against this $3.2 million alternative. for the entire story, see http://www.publicopiniononline.com/news/stories/20040511/localnews/398327.html -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 <lsiegel@cpeo.org> http://www.cpeo.org =========================================================== Buy Stocks and Index Funds for just $4 No Account or Investment Minimums and No Inactivity Fees Automatically invest weekly or monthly and build your future. http://click.topica.com/caaccMMaVxieSa8wsBbf/ Sharebuilder =========================================================== ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CPEO: A DECADE OF SUCCESS.
