By Mark Baker. The Age (Melbourne, Australia) May 15, 2004 Pham Thi Thuy Linh is ready for school. Her uniform is a smart blue dress and white embroidered blouse. But the pretty 10-year-old needs help with her shoes and to get the satchel over her shoulder. Linh has no arms. She writes with a ballpoint pen clutched dexterously between her toes and draws vivid pictures with crayons held the same way. Her grandfather, who died of leukaemia in the late 1980s, was a pilot who flew with United States forces spraying Agent Orange and the rainbow cocktail of other defoliants dumped across the country during the Vietnam War. The chemicals stripped the forests and grasslands that gave sanctuary to the communist insurgents and destroyed what the Pentagon liked to describe as "unfriendly" crops - the food sources of their enemies, which also happened to be the food sources of the civilian population. Both Linh's uncles were born before the war and have healthy families. But Linh's father was born in 1965, at the height of the spraying.
