Base-closure debate goes to House today

WASHINGTON - The debate over closing U.S. military bases moves to the
House today after the Senate voted 49-47 Tuesday to continue the base
closing schedule in 2005.

The House is expected to vote on whether to support a two-year delay in
the closure commission, to 2007. The proposal is an amendment to the
defense authorization bill.

Texas' senators, both Republicans, split on the measure. Sen. Kay Bailey
Hutchison voted for the amendment and Sen. John Cornyn opposed it.

The amendment, by Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., would have effectively
killed the existing round of base closures set for 2005 by requiring
that it apply only to U.S. foreign bases and give Congress the option to
vote on a round of domestic closures in 2007.
