Hanscom water is deemed safe by federal health scientists

By Stephen Hagan
Lincoln Journal (MA)
May 19, 2004

A federal agency has determined groundwater at Hanscom Air Force Base to
be safe.

The Atlanta-based Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry
(ATSDR), a federal public health agency of the Department of Health and
Human Services, recently released its public health assessment for the base.

According to the report, the Hanscom site's groundwater is not a public
health hazard because groundwater there is not used a source of drinking water.

However, the agency did find some contamination deep below the surface
at the Air Force base. ATSDR environmental health scientist Jeffrey
Kellam said his agency detected a presence of the solvent
Tri-Chloroethylene (TCE). The report was released last week.

Hanscom has been on the list of federal Superfund sites. Moore said as
long as people limit their exposure to the soil below the surface, they
should be safe. He advised officials to be careful if they plan to
excavate at Hanscom, adding its future use would be suitable for light
industry or as a factory site.

"You'd have to think about putting a day-care center or a school there,"
he said.
