Perchlorate standard debated

Massachusetts health officials were not invited to participate in the talks.

WOODS HOLE - Toxicology and public health experts from as far away as
California met yesterday to give their opinions about perchlorate to a
national group that will help determine in what quantities the chemical
is harmful. 

But the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection wasn't on
the National Research Council committee's five-hour agenda - despite the
fact that Massachusetts will likely become the first state in the nation
to regulate perchlorate.

Several of the speakers - scientists representing the military or
polluting companies - suggested that a health standard for perchlorate
be set at 40 parts per billion or higher, 40 times Massachusetts'
recently proposed cleanup standard of 1 part per billion.
