Some Tallevast wells contaminated

TALLEVAST -- At least five private drinking wells here are contaminated
with potentially dangerous chemicals that leaked from a nearby
manufacturing plant, state officials said today.

Test results show that the wells, near the former American Beryllium Co.
plant on Tallevast Road, contain several chemicals that have been linked
to cancer. One well contains the cleaning solvent trichloroethylene,
also known as TCE, at 60 times what the state considers safe. TCE can
cause liver and kidney cancer and a host of other ailments.

Tuesday evening officials from the state Department of Environmental
Protection and Manatee County Health Department handed out bottled water
to residents whose wells are contaminated.

The plant's owners, Lockheed Martin, is paying to hook the five homes up
to county water so residents won't have to drink from the tainted wells.
