Package of bills helps ensure the viability of Arizona bases

Call it the year of military base preservation.

Faced with the hard, cold reality of the Defense Department's intent to
reduce the nation's military installations by 25 percent next year,
state lawmakers took the message to heart and came out fighting.
 The package of bills they passed was an extraordinary affirmation of
support for Arizona's military industry that underscores the huge
economic contribution of the bases - an impact of $5.6 billion each year
- and the vital role they play in national security.

It's a welcome change from the years of paying lip service to the
onslaught of residential development that has threatened their missions,
particularly Luke Air Force Base, where the Northern Departure Corridor
is permanently off limits to F-16s with live munitions. That has left
only the Southern Departure Corridor available for bombing runs to the
Barry Goldwater Gunnery Range.
