Butner offers more than memories of World War II

BUTNER - Sixty years ago, they were firing artillery and a variety of
other military weapons all over a 40,000 acre area in southwestern
Granville County, spilling over some into Durham and Person counties.

No one was concerned about what happened to the ammunition fired onto
the many practice ranges at Camp Butner.

There was a war going on, the biggest war in history, the one for which
American participants are being honored by the new memorial being
dedicated Saturday in Washington, D.C.

The U.S. Army needed to train soldiers. That was the only concern then.

Today it's a different story.

Most of the area used by the Army 60 years ago is back in private hands,
and when remnants of the ammunition are found on the former ranges,
sometimes unexploded, residents are concerned.

Some have purchased land or lots in developments without knowing the
history of the area. They don't know that hunters on state owned
preserves here have been finding old ammunition for decades.

Every year or so, some family finds shells in or near their yards.
Regional news media gets excited, and the subject gets lots of
attention. And that brings in the Army Corps of Engineers.
