Lockheed dealt setback

RULING: The judge says pollution-trial jurors will be told that the
defense giant hid evidence.

Lockheed Martin Corp., accused of exposing Redlands-area residents to
pollution, will go to trial later this year with a legal disadvantage,
according to attorneys and court documents. 

Jurors assigned to the case will be told that the aerospace firm
intentionally hid potentially damaging evidence about Lockheed's
chemical-disposal practices. A judge also has barred Lockheed from
offering up evidence to counter any allegations of pollution or dumping. 

Lockheed officials deny any wrongdoing and accuse the plaintiffs'
attorneys of seeking an unfair advantage. 
 

"We have great empathy for the people that are ill," Lockheed
spokeswoman Gail Rymer said. "We do feel for these folks, but they have
been misled by these attorneys to think that they can sue a large
corporation for the illnesses that were not the result of anything we
did."
