U.S. begins transferring McClellan land deeds

Three years after the Air Force left McClellan Park, the federal
government is beginning to transfer land-ownership deeds to Sacramento
County in a move expected to spur more industrial development at the
complex that already employs 8,000 to 10,000 people.

The transfer of deeds on 97 acres at the former McClellan Air Force Base
is the first in what is expected to be a series of transfers that will
place most of the 3,452-acre facility in private hands.

Currently, the county holds 99-year leases on most of the base and has
sold those leases to McClellan Park, a private company developing the
base, which in turn leases space to more than 130 tenants. The Air Force
vacated the base July 13, 2001.
