The study, which was prompted by the ongoing battle over a casino planned next to the old Navy landing field, continues to be debated. At stake is the credibility of casino opponents, who warn the casino and hotel site planned by the Graton Rancheria tribe is probably contaminated and will require tens of millions of dollars to clean up. On the other side are military and Rohnert Park officials who say casino opponents are raising hypothetical scenarios of toxic contamination with little basis in reality. But state toxic control officials are taking a slightly differing view, saying there needs to be more investigation and possibly soil sampling near an old gun range to test for possible lead contamination. The $78,000 study commissioned by the Army Corps of Engineers at the urging of Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D-Petaluma, bolstered the opinion of the corps that there are no lingering problems associated with the airfield. "The original assumption has been pretty much correct -- that it doesn't pose a risk to the environment, or the community," said Gerald Vincent, the corps official in charge of overseeing any cleanup of the old airfield. ... for the entire article, see http://www.pressdemocrat.com/local/news/21airfield_a1a01_a1_mainstreeta.html -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 <lsiegel@cpeo.org> http://www.cpeo.org ----------------------------------------------------------- Give Your Team Access to Their PCs from Anywhere.
