Cold War remnants face OR recycling

Initial deal with Duratek will relocate warhead casings from Texas plant

OAK RIDGE - Pieces of the Cold War arms race are melting away in Oak
Ridge.

Duratek Inc. recently won a contract to declassify and dispose of old
warhead casings from the Pantex Plant near Amarillo, Texas. Pantex is
the U.S. Department of Energy's assembly and disassembly center for
nuclear warheads.

Duratek will use its Oak Ridge recycling center, including the world's
largest "radioactive foundry," to destroy classified details of the
obsolete components and prepare the materials for reuse within the
nuclear industry or disposal as waste. Federal regulations prohibit the
disposal of classified components without removing the classified
features.

The initial $62,000 contract calls for a pilot project involving four of
the warhead casings, said Vince Adams, DOE's director of materials reuse
and technical oversight.

If that work is successful, the Oak Ridge facility could be chosen to
process as many as 650 of the warhead casings, Adams said. Or DOE could
opt to spread the work among several companies and test different
techniques for destroying the classified nature of the parts, he said.
