Veil of mystery, rust of ages, nature enshrouds missile base to its neighbors

OXFORD - Sprouting high above the surrounding cornstalks stands a functioning emergency communications tower.

Crops creep toward the edges of the barbed-wire fence that walls this Cold War outpost from the present and its neighbors, who remain unsure what exactly it is they're living next to.

No signs inform visitors that the former missile defense base for Cincinnati gathers dust and rust in the midst of this unlikely rural patch of Oxford Township farmland along Taylor Road.

Three locked missile silos stand empty of their weaponry while contaminated water lies trapped in their underground offices, which were designed to provide safe haven during nuclear attack. Grass and trees are slowly supplanting the broken concrete driveways. Paint peels on light posts and buildings.
