Williamstown grapples with water options

WILLIAMSTOWN -- The state Department of Environmental Protection has
listed several treatment options for the Mount Greylock Regional High
School wells contaminated by perchlorate, a component of rocket fuel and fireworks.

A letter from the agency, dated June 18 and sent to various town and
school officials, outlines several strategies but does not recommend a
course of action, as the state does not yet have an official maximum
contaminant level for the pollutant.

The measures -- ranging from simple public warnings to treatment systems
to the construction of a town water main to the high school -- have all
been under discussion since the problem was discovered in early May.
