By PAIGE AUSTIN Riverside Press-Enterprise (CA) July 2, 2004 NORCO - State regulators will meet with residents on Golden West Lane in Norco today to discuss toxic contamination that has migrated onto their properties from nearby land formerly owned by Wyle Laboratories, a hazardous-testing facility. The California Department of Toxic Substances Control this week analyzed soil gas samples taken from the yards of six homes and found low levels of trichloroethylene, or TCE, a substance suspected of causing cancer. According to a report released to residents, the levels do not pose an immediate health risk to the community. While state officials know that a plume of toxic groundwater is flowing off the Wyle Labs site, they are still trying to understand where it has gone. Recently, TCE contamination was discovered in a well drilled to test groundwater on Wyle's border within about 30 feet of two Golden West homes. At 11,000 parts per billion of TCE, the amount is reportedly the highest level of groundwater contamination on the entire Wyle property. The maximum contaminant level of TCE allowed in drinking water is 5 parts per billion, but not all groundwater ends up as drinking water. The soil gas level of TCE contamination, 540 micrograms per liter, discovered at the well site was roughly twice the state's threshold for posing a long-term health threat. ... for the entire article, see http://www.pe.com/localnews/corona/stories/PE_News_Local_wyle02.5747c.html -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 <lsiegel@cpeo.org> http://www.cpeo.org Your free subscription is supported by today's sponsor: ------------------------------------------------------------------- Amazing Diet Patch The fastest - Easiest way to lose weight!
