By PAIGE AUSTIN Riverside Press-Enterprise (CA) July 3, 2004 NORCO - To the naked eye, Golden West Lane looks like a typical Norco neighborhood. But there are small hints at the anxiety of its residents - newspapers piled up outside an empty home, "for sale" signs going up and down as homeowners debate with themselves about whether to stay or go. For weeks, the residents of Golden West have been struggling with shock and confusion stemming from the knowledge that contamination from a nearby hazardous-testing facility has crept into the soil beneath their neighborhood. On Friday, the California Department of Toxic Substances Control released a report informing the residents that traces of a suspected carcinogen used at neighboring Wyle Labs have shown up in soil gas samples taken at six homes. The low levels of contamination mean that the residents face little to no increased risk of cancer, said state toxicologist William Bosan.
