Macalloy expects to award the contract for the project before Aug. 1 and begin work soon after. The U.S. Department of Defense will pay $9.62 million of the cost. The plant converted ore into ferrochromium, a raw material used to make stainless steel. The U.S. War Department, today the Department of Defense, was part-owner of the plant during World War II, and federal officials said they made enough material there to fight a 40-year war. They made 10 times the amount of material needed. Macalloy Corp. and a previous owner, British Oxygen Corp., will split the remaining costs. ... for the entire article, see http://www.charleston.net/stories/070304/loc_03macalloy.shtml -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 <lsiegel@cpeo.org> http://www.cpeo.org Your free subscription is supported by today's sponsor: ------------------------------------------------------------------- Apply now for a No-Annual-Fee Discover® Platinum Card 0% Intro APR*, No Annual Fee, Up to 2% Cashback Bonus® award* Start Saving Today ?
