Six years after 200 workers were handed pink slips and the Macalloy
Corp. plant closed, engineers are ready to begin a $12 million cleanup
of the 141-acre contaminated site on Shipyard Creek in North Charleston.

Macalloy expects to award the contract for the project before Aug. 1 and
begin work soon after. The U.S. Department of Defense will pay $9.62
million of the cost.

The plant converted ore into ferrochromium, a raw material used to make
stainless steel. The U.S. War Department, today the Department of
Defense, was part-owner of the plant during World War II, and federal
officials said they made enough material there to fight a 40-year war.
They made 10 times the amount of material needed.

Macalloy Corp. and a previous owner, British Oxygen Corp., will split
the remaining costs.
