Ten underground storage tanks confirmed, removals to begin by fall

Investigators for the Army Corps of Engineers have found 10 underground
storage tanks at the site of the former Scioto Ordnance Plant just
northeast of Marion.

Last week, MWH Americas Inc., a Colorado firm contracting with the
Corps, through field work verified the existence of five of the tanks,
bringing the total of confirmed tanks to 10, said Kimberlee Turner,
spokeswoman for the Corps' Louisville District.

Following up on historical documentation and/or interviews of employees
of the former plant, investigators dug down to verify the presence of
the tanks and sampled the contents, said Kevin Jasper, the Corps'
project manager. The tanks were covered back over and marked.

The Corps is waiting for analytical results of what the samples contain,
Jasper said, adding that the Corps suspects the tanks contain gasoline,
heating fuel and/or water. He expects to receive the sample results in
the next couple of weeks.

"It's not like we're expecting solvents or anything like that," he said.

Tanks were found at the former sites of three artillery fuse load lines,
a minor caliber fuse load line, two fire stations and two fuel stations
where they found two tanks each.
