Stevens defends federal buyout of Arctic allotment

WASHINGTON--Sen. Ted Stevens is defending his proposal to have the
federal government buy a contaminated site from the family of Arctic
Slope Regional Corp. President Jacob Adams, a longtime political
supporter, for $2.5 million.

Stevens said he was angered and disappointed by an Anchorage Daily News
editorial Wednesday that questioned whether the land was worth that much.

"Stuffing federal dollars into the budget to unfairly enrich your
friends is a classic description of cronyism and corruption," the
editorial said. Stevens, who declined to answer questions about the
proposal while in Anchorage the previous week, needed to offer a better
justification for the expenditure if he is to avoid the labels, the
editorial said.

Stevens told reporters in Washington, D.C., on Thursday that he took
"great umbrage" at the editorial's tone. "They're trying to destroy my
credibility at the time of the elections," Stevens said. Stevens himself
is not up for re-election this year.

The money, in the Senate version of the annual Defense Department
spending bill, would buy a 160-acre Native allotment at Oliktok Point.
The Adams family has used the spot at least since the 1920s, Stevens'
spokeswoman Courtney Schikora said.
