Energy Dept. seeks $935,000 fine for Fluor

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER July 16, 2004

The U.S. Energy Department is proposing a $935,000 fine for one of its contractors for alleged safety deficiencies at a project to remove radioactive sludge from Hanford Nuclear Reservation storage basins.

If the amount stands, it would be the largest civil penalty ever levied at Hanford, according to the department's Office of Price-Anderson Enforcement.

The preliminary notice of violation, which was issued yesterday, alleges significant design and management flaws by Fluor Hanford Inc. in the company's plans for removing 50 cubic meters of sludge from the K Basins, which are two 1 million-gallon pools holding spent nuclear fuel rods.

That plan was scrapped after an Energy Department review in April 2003.
