Complicated real estate deal at stake on S.F. islands
Questions raised about supervisor's qualifications

The redevelopment of Treasure Island and adjacent Yerba Buena Island in the
middle of the bay is one of the most complex and ambitious real estate
deals in San Francisco history.

Developers propose revamping the former naval station into a half-dozen
bustling neighborhoods, a ritzy resort destination and a recreation area --
a plan 10 years in the making that still needs a panoply of approvals from
Navy, state and local officials. The project would be developed on behalf
of San Francisco, which is set to take control of the land.

This week it was revealed that Mayor Gavin Newsom has approached Supervisor
Tony Hall, a veteran bureaucrat, first-term legislator and professional
singer, to take charge.
