Mahopac property owner faces land seizure

COLD SPRING - A Mahopac developer who owns a 6.64-acre piece of the
former Marathon Battery factory has until Oct. 15 to pay more than
$900,000 in back taxes and fees or face seizure of the once-toxic site
by the county. 

Kenneth Kearney's business, Nozzleman 60 LLC, purchased the 6.64 acres
and an adjoining 4.74 acres in 2003. The U.S. Army manufactured airplane
batteries there from 1952 to 1980. The larger parcel on Kemble Avenue
was declared a Superfund site because of contamination, and a
more-than-$100 million cleanup of cadmium and other heavy metals
occurred from 1993 to 1995. A 100,000-square-foot factory was razed, and
remaining contaminants were buried 25 feet below the ground. 

Kearney plans to build single-family homes on the smaller,
noncontaminated property. 

County and municipal officials would like to use the bigger tract for
more parking in the village - a thriving tourist destination - and
possibly for ball fields.
