Munitions team preps for cleanup Work starts Tuesday at Harley By MICHELLE STARR York Daily Record/Sunday News (PA) September 5, 2004 Tucked behind the gates of Harley-Davidson?s Springettsbury Township plant is a search party looking for metal. The team is using tools, like industrial-style metal detectors, to find past generations? military garbage to scrap or destroy. This garbage started collecting in 1941 when York Safe & Lock produced 40mm anti-aircraft gunmounts. It continued to gather when the U.S. Navy took over, and Blaw-Knox managed the site, from 1944 to 1964. They expanded production with war-service weapons and rocket launchers, 3?/50 guns, 20mm aircraft guns and power drive units for 5?/54 guns.
