Lack of water handicaps course

YORK -- Hawk's Nest Golf Club is ready to open, except for lack of
irrigation. The 18-hole par-72 course fronting Route 199 was supposed to
open last winter but has been delayed indefinitely. 

?We don't have the water right now to grow the turf,? said Jim Noel,
director of economic development for York.

Rinaldi said he and the county are heavily relying on the Navy to help
them with the irrigation. 

The course sits on the contaminated portion of what used to be the
state's fuel farm, which was tainted when diesel fuel tanks buried
underground began leaking in the 1970s. County officials have insisted
the contamination is no threat to humans and the land will clean itself
over time. 

Water from Jones Mill Pond is supposed to help that along, which may
explain why the Navy doesn't want to divert it.  ...
