Lack of water handicaps course By Tara Hayden The Virginia Gazette September 11, 2004 YORK -- Hawk's Nest Golf Club is ready to open, except for lack of irrigation. The 18-hole par-72 course fronting Route 199 was supposed to open last winter but has been delayed indefinitely. ?We don't have the water right now to grow the turf,? said Jim Noel, director of economic development for York. ... Rinaldi said he and the county are heavily relying on the Navy to help them with the irrigation. The course sits on the contaminated portion of what used to be the state's fuel farm, which was tainted when diesel fuel tanks buried underground began leaking in the 1970s. County officials have insisted the contamination is no threat to humans and the land will clean itself over time. Water from Jones Mill Pond is supposed to help that along, which may explain why the Navy doesn't want to divert it. ... for the entire article, see http://www.vagazette.com/news/va-news4_091104sep11,0,5933560.story?coll=va-news -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 <lsiegel@cpeo.org> http://www.cpeo.org _______________________________________________ Military mailing list Military@list.cpeo.org http://www.cpeo.org/mailman/listinfo/military | |
