State may buy ships for artificial reefPublished in By KIRK MOORE the Asbury Park Press September 14, 2004 TRENTON -- For the first time in the 20 years of the state's artificial reef program, state legislators are proposing to spend about $250,000 in a bid to obtain five large Navy surplus ships -- a financial commitment that reef advocates say would be worth far more in the federal support it will bring to building fish havens. "Ninety percent of the (ship) cleaning costs would be paid by the feds," said Steven D. Nagiewicz, a Brick diver and captain of the dive boat Diversion II out of Point Pleasant Beach. "There's 12 to 15 other states, Florida especially, that are looking to get these ships." The state Assembly Environment and Solid Waste Committee voted yesterday to release bill A-2630 for a vote by the full Assembly. Sponsored jointly by Assembly members Christopher Bateman, R-Somerset, and Robert J. Smith II, D-Gloucester, the legislation would set aside $250,000 to prepare surplus ships for sinking, but Bateman said he is planning to amend the language to allot $50,000 per ship as they are acquired. … for the entire article, see http://www.app.com/app/story/0,21625,1050463,00.html -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 http://www.cpeo.org
