Base cleanup standard proposed The state releases draft on required removal of perchlorate from water, soil. By AMANDA LEHMERT Cape Cod Times September 27, 2004 After much debate about just how harmful the substance may be, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection has released a draft cleanup standard for perchlorate. If the proposed standard of 1 part per billion as a cleanup level is adopted, it will become the first of its kind in the country. States such as Nevada and California have discovered the chemical in groundwater, but have not yet set standards that force removal of perchlorate from groundwater or soil. The cleanup level will affect the Army's Groundwater Study Program at the Massachusetts Military Reservation. The Army has said it cannot clean up several plumes of perchlorate that begin on the base until there is a standard set.
