Settlement reached on Sunflower property By FINN BULLERS The Kansas City Star October 2, 2004 An out-of-court settlement reached this week will force the federal government to assess contamination at the defunct Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant site near De Soto. The settlement, reached Thursday between the U.S. General Services Administration and an activist group in Johnson County, says the federal government must also make a greater effort to list historic artifacts and catalog toxic wastes at the 9,065-acre site before it is transferred to new owners. The government also must pay the group $50,000 in court costs. Other details of the settlement were not released, but it has been approved by the Justice Department.
