Charleston, Defense Department settle contamination claim The State (SC) (Associated Press) October 13, 2004 CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Defense Department will pay the city of Charleston $2.5 million to settle a claim arising from contamination along the Cooper River. The claim concerned contamination in the area of the South Carolina Aquarium caused by the Charleston Naval Industrial Reserve Shipyard during World War II. Of the $2.5 million, $500,000 will go to the Washington, D.C., law firm that helped the city pursue the claim. The settlement was negotiated through the U.S. Justice Department. The $2 million will be used for additional projects in the aquarium area, said Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. Proposals for the area include a planned International African-American Museum as well as a city park surrounded by new housing and retail space.
