Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Final Report on Corrosion of UXO in Soil Environments |
Reprinted from the Fall 2004 edition of the U.S. Army Environmental Center's "Fielding Environmental Solutions," on line at http://www.aec.army.mil/usaec/technology/fes00.html. Final Report on Corrosion of UXO in Soil Environments The U.S. Army Environmental Center through funding provided by the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) has recently released a report, number CP-1226 entitled, Corrosion of Unexploded Ordnance in Soil Environments. The report identifies the type, character and rate of perforations in the casings of UXO underlying soil at U.S. Military Installations. Understanding the condition of UXO casings will help characterize the potential for UXO energetic material to move into and through soil at testing and training ranges. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers collected Field data from six ranges actively undergoing clearance. Approximately 200 pieces of ordnance were studied to assess the relative impacts of various parameters on the degradation of ordnance casings. An analytical model predicting perforation of ordinance in soil was constructed and allows the user to input specific metal and soil characteristics. The data collected and the resulting model will provide the Department of Defense with the ability to perform risk assessment calculations, mitigate release rates by alternating environmental conditions, focus cleanup resources on the highest risk area and continue training and testing on those ranges that do not pose significant risk. The final report can be found in the online library at the SERDP website http://www.serdp.gov/.
