Boxborough chief joins Littleton in banning use of blasting agentsBy Chris Cassidy The Beacon (MA) October 28, 2004 BOXBOROUGH - Fire Chief Ken Lyons has issued an emergency order banning the use of blasting agents containing perchlorate after the chemical was found in all three wells serving the Harvard Ridge condominiums last month. Perchlorate is an oxidizer that enhances the burning process and is commonly used for blasting activities. The state Department of Environmental Protection advises pregnant women, infants and children up to age 12 and people with hypothyroidism against consuming water testing higher than one part per billion. For the general population, the water is safe up to 18 parts per billion. As a result, the pool at Harvard Ridge closed last month.
