Taylor Countians opposed to Air Force bombing range in Big Bend San Jose Mercury News (Associated Press) November 3, 2004 PERRY, Fla. - Residents of Taylor County overwhelmingly said in a nonbinding straw vote that they don't want the Air Force using their part of the Big Bend area as a bombing range. The Air Force is considering sites along this lightly populated stretch of the Gulf Coast for a potential test range for plane-launched air-to-surface bombs because it is running out of space near Eglin Air Force Base, where high-rise condos and a growing population are beginning to encroach. Taylor County is one of the few remaining sparsely populated areas along the coast, with just 19,415 people - fewer than 20 per square mile.
